Ramharipur Ramakrishna Mission High School

Welcome to Ramakrishna mission, Ramharipur

A severe drought struck West Bengal in 1915, and the worst affected district happened to be Bankura. At this difficult time of the afflicted people of Bankura, the monks of the Ramakrishna Math, Bankura came forward to help them. Under the stewardship of Revered Swami Maheswaranandji Maharaj (1890-1973), popularly known as ‘Daktaar’ Maharaj, and the then head of the Ramakrishna Math Bankura, a major famine relief work was conducted in Birrah village and its surrounding areas. Swami Sailajananda was sent from the Bankura center to conduct the relief work. He stayed at the Manasa Mandir of Birrah village and distributed the relief items.   Several enthusiastic people of Birrah village also came forward to lend a helping hand in this noble mission. In course of the ongoing relief work, Revered ‘Daktaar’ Maharaj used to conduct religious discourses to the villagers in the evenings, thus introducing the life and teachings of the Holy Trio to them. These discourses brought a new thrill in the village life. After the relief work was over Revered ‘Daktaar’ Maharaj and his team went back to Bankura, but he used to visit Birrah from time to time and conduct religious discourses as well as offer medical help to the villagers. At a point the villagers prayed to Revered ‘Daktaar’ Maharaj to kindly consider opening a sub-center of the Bankura Math in Birrah village. Moved by the sincerity of the villagers and at their ardent request, Revered ‘Daktaar’ Maharaj sent Swami Swaswarupananda to Birrah village in 1916. He started daily puja of Sri Ramakrishna in the Manasa Mandir and continued religious discourses as before. This may be considered as the humble beginning of the present Ashrama at Ramharipur.
